Call out for WA members to apply for Mentorships for Women in Music

Thursday, 16 May 2019

WA mentor and songwriter Tanya Ransom

Following up on last year's inaugural women in music mentoring program for WA members, we're excited to launch an expanded second year with mentoring in both Perth and Broome.

Applications are now open for WA songwriters working on the launch of a first major project, apply by Friday 28 June. The nationwide, genre-based Mentorships for Women in Music applications opened in April, with deadline to apply Sunday 2 June. Yes, you can apply for both!

Mentorships for Women in WA Music is the initiative of Senior Writer Services Rep Tenille Elkins, who manges the Perth program. Mentoring guidance for Broome members will be provided by songwriter Tanya Ransom

This opportunity is designed to support the mentees holistically with:

  • practical advice on establishing a career
  • guidance on expanding and honing the songwriter’s craft
  • assisting with planning and carrying out their first major project

Why mentoring?

Tenille explains, "I’ve been fortunate to have worked at APRA AMCOS for 17 years and to have Lectured in Music Industry Skills at TAFE Leederville for ten. In that time I’ve spoken to a countless number of people in the early stages of their career, who are about to embark on their first major project and are really in need of some guidance."

"It can be really daunting in these early stages, and having someone close at hand who can help set some realistic goals, create a plan, help navigate various aspects of the industry, assist with the appropriate contacts, and generally just be there as a sounding board is something that so many people have said they need. This opportunity not only provides mentees with a support person and industry mentors but also a great space to pursue the business side of their goals and alongside other like-minded, driven individuals."

Who can apply?

We invite women residing Western Australia who are a member of APRA AMCOS and are independent, self-managed artists (i.e., not signed to a label) embarking on their first major project. This project may be but is not limited to a musical release or tour (regional or national). Final project decisions will be decided between Mentor and Mentee. Please note that whilst the application asks for recordings these can be of demo (demonstration) quality.

Perth opportunity information - If the applicant wants assistance with their first recorded project, then the professional recording should already be budgeted for, if not already in motion.
